BBC NEWS | Americas | Bush calls for gay marriage ban
Mr Bush said: “Ages of experience have taught us that the commitment of a husband and a wife to love and to serve one another promotes the welfare of children and the stability of society.”
“An amendment to the constitution is necessary because activist courts have left our nation with no other choice,” Mr Bush said.
It starts small, with Bush pointing out that “a husband and a wife … promotes … the stability of society.” Next it will be “gay marriage erodes the stability of society.” Once people are riled up enough it will become “gay marriage weakens the country and makes us open to terrorist attack.” Until the Republicans can claim, with a straight face, that it “is unpatriotic to support gay marriage.” You know where that leads… “The War On Gay Marriage” and “enemy combatant” status for any same-sex couples caught holding hands in public.
Historically ‘marriage’ has been a ceremony performed by religions, and recognized by the government as a matter of contract law. If we allow politicians to define ‘marriage’ we have allowed them the first step towards defining religions. Having an amendment that defines marriage would effectively outlaw any religion that was willing to perform marriages for for unlawful combinations of people. How long before the ‘war on anti-Christian religions’?
